Door Hardware – One of the Most Important Aspects When Choosing Entrance Doors
The entrance door is the first thing a visitor notices. It is essentially the “business card” of the homeowner. A door is characterized by its reliability and aesthetic appeal. The material used for its construction and additional components—door hardware—play a particularly important role.
Three main factors to consider when choosing a door:
- Reliability (sturdiness) – depends on the choice of primary material and the door lock;
- Insulation (door thickness) – depends on the construction and installation method;
- Originality (appearance) – may include decorative forging elements or initials of the owners, highlighting the style and sophistication of the homeowner.
The main materials used for doors must meet the following requirements:
- Durability – assessed through the lock mechanism, door frame, hinges, and overall installation;
- Reliability;
- Strength indicators;
- Fire safety;
- Sealing properties;
- Sound and thermal insulation.
The uniqueness of each door can be enhanced with additional elements – the hardware. The word “hardware” comes from French and means “auxiliary materials or fittings.” Door hardware includes handles, locks, peepholes, hinges, and accessories.
A reliable home security system can be created by selecting a lock that meets all the owner’s requirements. Locks have different complexity levels and corresponding prices. Typically, two types of locks are installed: lever (warded) locks and cylinder locks.
Lever (warded) locks consist of shaped plates with cutouts of specific forms. When the key is turned, the lever rises and takes a certain position, releasing the bolt rods and opening the lock.

Cylinder locks consist of pins that move vertically. The combination and number of pins in the cylinder determine the security level of the entire locking mechanism. The cylinder is protected from external effects (kicking, break-ins) with built-in armored plates.

Hinges also affect burglary resistance. They can be hidden, exposed, or semi-hidden. The door leaf weight determines the number of hinges: two for doors weighing 70–90 kg, three for doors over 100 kg. Hinges can have ball bearings or fit over a pin; ball-bearing hinges are more durable.
Hidden hinges better protect the door from break-ins. Hinges are made from brass or steel, with steel being more durable. Hinges allow adjustment of thermal and sound insulation. For this purpose, curved screw-in hinges are used. When the door is closed, all gaps are automatically sealed.
Properly installed hinge assemblies prevent door sagging over time. Without hinges, the door loses its main function: opening and closing.
Peepholes also have an important role. Their construction and installation are similar: they consist of a lens, eyepiece, and housing. Glass and plastic are used for optical peepholes. Glass is more fragile, while plastic is impact-resistant but may yellow, scratch, or distort vision over time.
If the peephole system has four lenses, it is considered optimal and does not distort the view. Peephole dimensions depend on door thickness: extended (55–100 mm), standard (30–55 mm), and extra-long (100 mm).
It is important to consider door parameters during installation to avoid abrupt visibility changes. Peepholes come with covers that ensure secure viewing, block light, and close the opening. They are easy to open and close.
Door handles are another crucial element. They vary in shape (curved, straight, angled), color, style, function, price, and quality. Handles are the final touch to the door’s design, so selecting the right ones is essential, considering the variety of forms and materials.
The classic door chain with a hook is well known. It allows you to open the door slightly for a stranger while maintaining a safe distance (5–15 cm). Modern options include internal toggles or “thumbturns,” so you don’t need to insert a key to open the door from the inside.
Today, doors occupy a leading position in the construction market. The range of hardware is extensive and diverse. This wide selection of additional door elements allows for creating unique and sophisticated design solutions.
